Cutouts is an exploration in digital paper-cutting.
Three scenes with playful characters, full of detailed paper cutouts, and a trick for your eyes.
One advantage of the project of creating a handmade project in the digital sphere is the possibility of introducing interactivity. By moving the cursor over the image, anyone can experience the 'real life' movement of the paper scene and see the overlapping layers and shadows from different angles.
To further confuse the viewer and play with the line between digital and physical, we have some realistic paper cutouts with all their jagged edges and tactile feel. The play between the interactive piece and apparently real paper on a cutting board tricks the eye and raises questions over the role of digital tools in a traditionally physical sphere.
All the cutouts include natural elements; plants and flowers wind their way around the edges of the scenes. Inspiration was taken from the parks of North London and the characters we see there: dog walkers with every breed imaginable, tennis players on sunny days, and people swimming in the ponds side-by-side with the ducks.
When working with paper, or immitating the craft, it is important to think about the order of elements, and layering is essential. There are many details in the overlapping and it's the imperfection that gives the pieces personality and a unique beauty.
The pieces all start as sketches which are translated into three dimensions with overlapping papers and twisted, folded plants. The sketches have a rough, imperfect style that is mimicked in the paper cutting, the jagged edges and details in patterns and lines giving each piece a uniqueness.
